 I want to study traditional commercial markets in historical Cairo (Khan El Kalily Souq) as an example in part of my PhD courses using spacesyntax,my question is which method should i use: axial map or VGA to understand the pedestrian flow logic through those spaces, and is there any paper or sources of information regarding this subjects

These are mainly axial systems at the urban scale so axial maps should be done, however the souq's I have visited also have very interesting local convex and visibility relations, so I am sure that VGA would say interesting things at a more local and detailed scale.

Dear Nabil - This is actually a very interesting question. In general, line based analysis, and in particular the segment angular analysis available in DepthMap is the best - and best tested - syntactic technique for urban pedestrian movement. VGA is much less good for urban movement because it conflates one and two dimensional analysis i.e. a space may be integrated either because it is well connected in the linear pattern or because it is wider, and the technique does not tell you which.

 This is why in urban analysis we tend to put the width of spaces into the regression model rather than the spatial model, so that the spatial aspect of movement remains clear. Where we have found VGA,and in particular visual integration analysis, strong is in buildings like department stores, and we think it is because movement is less linear and more exploratory, and so movement used the breadth dimension of space to complement the linear dimension much more than in urban movement which is in general less exploratory and more linear.
